THOUSANDS OF ESAU'S

As I prayed meditating on the Word of the Lord, through the holy ghost came a sobering message. The Lord spoke into my spirit saying, “Thousands and thousands of Esaus.” At first, I could not see them. I could not understand what God was trying to show me. But as I continued to meditate on the vision, the Lord opened my understanding. I began to see not only others—I began to see myself.
Is it possible that I could ever allow the things of this life, or my own flesh, to keep me from a place of repentance, servitude, and humility, genuine faith, and affection for God?
Everyone who starts living for God wants to make it. No one begins this journey hoping to fall short of the grace of God. Yet the Bible warns us that many before us have fallen short, and many after us will also fall short.
To fall short is to end up with Esau—and with the thousands and thousands of Esaus who have followed him. They followed profanity. They followed fornication. They followed the flesh. And they missed the mark.
Esau Did Not Make It
The Bible gives us a sobering picture of Esau’s end:
“Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.” - Hebrews 12:16–17
This is not vague. This is not implied. This is a clear, terrifying indictment:
Esau did not make it.
He was called:
a fornicator
a profane person
one who sold his birthright
one who sought repentance with tears
found no place of repentance
What a sobering reality—that a person can desire repentance, seek repentance, cry for repentance, and yet never truly repent. They can want forgiveness, want change, want transformation, and still never actually change.
Hell Hath Enlarged Itself
There is a Scripture that says:
“Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure…” — Isaiah 5:14
I can only imagine why hell would have to enlarge itself.
The enlarging of hell is due to the massive, large‑scale number of people who have never found a true, sincere, genuine place of repentance. When God first spoke to me saying, “Thousands and thousands of Esaus,” I could not see them. But as I meditated, I began to see them everywhere. I began to see people who were raised in truth, raised around prayer, in close proximity to the Word of God, —yet never found the place of repentance.
Esau Was Not Raised in Darkness
This is one of the most frightening parts of Esau’s story.
Esau did not grow up in an atheistic home. He was not raised by rebellious parents. He was not taught to pursue carnal things. He was raised by:
Abraham — the father of the faithful
Isaac — a man of obedience and sacrifice
He grew up in a home where:
prayers were prayed
altars were built
covenants were honored
the fear of God was present
the promises of God were taught
the blessing and inheritance were explained
He watched his father walk righteously. He heard his grandfather speak of covenant.
He saw his brother pursue God relentlessly. Yet he himself never found the place of repentance.
He was raised in a godly atmosphere, taught truth, surrounded by prayer, and yet he could not ever find that place where he truly repented, truly changed, and found peace with God.
The Modern Esaus: Hiding in Plain Sight
Who are the thousands of Esaus?
They are not the atheists.
They are not the pagans.
They are not the openly rebellious.
They are the ones:
raised in church
taught the Bible
familiar with prayer
surrounded by good leaders
hearing preaching every week
knowing what repentance is
knowing what holiness is
knowing the narrow road
Yet they live with invisible shackles:
habits they never surrender
sins they never forsake
lifestyles they never crucify
convictions they never obey
They feel sorry for their sin. They shed tears over their failures. They grieve their fleshly nature from time to time. But it is never enough to truly repent.
As one preacher said:
“We live in a generation where people cry over sin they never turn from.”
Living on the Edge of Christianity
I wonder how many are living right now:
not fully in
not fully out
playing on the fence
knowing they need to repent
knowing they need to change
knowing they need to turn
but unable to do so
They wish they had the courage to live a greater life. They wish they had the strength to be a better man or woman. They dream of repentance. They desire repentance. They seek repentance. But they cannot find it. They have become like Esau—a profane person who sold his birthright for earthly, fleshly pursuits.
The Trumpet Call
Once again, I hear the voice of the Lord saying: “Thousands and thousands of Esaus.”
In prayer, I realized God was not only warning me—He was calling me to sound the trumpet and warn others of this grave mistake that so many are making.
Will we justify an unfaithful life? Will we continue to excuse hypocrisy? Will we shed a few tears here and there but never truly let go? Will we mourn sin we never turn from?
Oh, that God would lead us to a place of fire, a place of repentance, a place of brokenness, a place of desire for the face of God.
May we live every day as true soldiers of the cross, as true Christians, as true followers of Jesus Christ.
A Final Plea
I write this hoping and praying that someone reading it will be stirred to find a place of prayer—an altar of true repentance. And not only repent, but pray for the kingdom at large. Pray for the Esaus. Pray for the thousands and thousands of Esaus who move forward ignorantly, foolishly, justifying unrepented sin, unfaithfulness, and spiritual slothfulness.
May God awaken us before we join the multitudes who sought repentance with tears—but never found it.
